A 12-Week Holiday Savings Plan Using the 100 Envelope Challenge

A 12-Week Holiday Savings Plan Using the 100 Envelope Challenge

Holiday expenses have a way of arriving all at once. Gifts, gatherings, travel, and little extras can put pressure on a budget, even when you know they are coming. A simple savings challenge can help you set money aside a little at a time, without asking you to save a huge amount every week.

The 100 envelope savings challenge is often presented as an all-or-nothing goal. It does not have to work that way. For the next 12 weeks, you can choose just 12 amounts that fit your life and use them to build a holiday fund at your own pace.

1. Pick one holiday goal

Start with a number that has a purpose. Perhaps you want $100 for gifts, $150 for a family meal, or a small cushion for December expenses. Write down the goal and what it will cover. Giving the money a job makes it easier to decide how much to set aside.

Before choosing a savings amount, look at your regular bills and essentials. The challenge should work within your budget. It should not require you to miss a payment or put everyday expenses on a credit card.

2. Choose 12 manageable amounts

Think of each envelope as one small step, not a deadline to complete all 100. Pick 12 amounts you could reasonably save between now and the holidays. They do not need to be in numerical order, and a tight week can have a smaller amount.

For example, these 12 amounts add up to $155:

$2 $4 $5 $7 $9 $10
$12 $14 $17 $20 $25 $30

This is only an example. If $155 is too much, choose smaller amounts. If you have more room in your budget, choose larger ones. The useful goal is an amount you can actually set aside, not a number that looks impressive on social media.

3. Match the amounts to your real weeks

Look at your calendar before assigning amounts. If rent and other bills make the first week of the month expensive, choose a low number for that week. If you expect extra income in a later week, save one of the higher amounts for then.

When you set money aside, mark that amount on your tracker. You can use physical cash in envelopes, or keep the money in a separate savings account and use the printable pages to record your progress. Choose the method you are most likely to maintain.

4. Make room to adjust

A savings plan is a guide, not a test. If an unexpected expense appears, swap a planned amount for a smaller one or pause for a week. When your budget allows, return to the next envelope. A missed week does not erase the money you already saved.

You can also change the purpose of the fund. If holiday plans become simpler, keep the remaining savings for a January bill or another goal. The habit of setting money aside is valuable beyond one season.

5. Keep the plan where you can see it

Put your tracker in a budget binder, near your calendar, or somewhere you review your money each week. Check off each amount as you save it. Seeing the completed steps can make the goal feel more concrete, especially when progress is gradual.

Our 100 Envelope Savings Challenge Bundle gives you printable pages in US Letter, A5, and A6 sizes, so you can choose a format that works with your setup. Download, print, and begin with the amounts that fit your budget. You can continue the challenge after the holidays if you want to.

You do not need a perfect 12 weeks to make progress. Pick a purpose, choose your first manageable amount, and start there.
